ANNOUNCING OUR NEW BOOK!!

We are so happy to announce the publication of our new book Counseling and Advising 21st Century Middle School Students An Interactive Curriculum for Academic Growth, Career and College Readiness, and Social-Emotional Development. Rooted firmly in our belief that the middle school years are a pivotal period in adolescent development, we want to assist counselors, teachers and administrators in their all-important work as they help all middle school students improve their future choices. Initially, we examine the challenges of middle school as students move into a new academic world as they develop cognitively and physically. Emphasis is also placed upon the social-emotional development that occurs in adolescence. Using an advisory system or group counseling sessions, we then present an interactive curriculum designed to show adolescents how to become more engaged, proactive students in the learning process. Our curriculum also includes career exploration and an early look at colleges. Once again, the middle school years are perfect time to broaden students’ perceptions of their future selves. Agendas for working with parents in each step of the curriculum are also provided. We also include sample lesson plans and suggestions about grants and partnerships with colleges. Finally, we suggest ways of making the transition to high school flow smoothly. Our publisher Routledge states that our “book closes the current gap on future development guidance for counselors, educators, and parents, and acts as a vital tool for professionals working with middle school children to provide as much guidance and support as possible.”

Our other book, Counseling 21st Century Students for Optimal College and Career Readiness A 9th – 12th Grade Curriculum 2nd edition is a response to the overwhelming need that counselors and students confront in the fast changing global world economy. This second edition presents an updated action-based curriculum for high school counselors to help to foster the growth of students and engage them in learning what they need to succeed. This book provides a model for developing a successful college advising office as well as essential advice on methods of working with parents. Specific topics discussed include successful transition to 9th grade, using technology in the college advising process, assisting students in college research and application, and helping seniors successfully transition to college. The curriculum is geared for use by school counselors, college advisors, and students in graduate counseling courses.
